Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) is a coding symbology used by the document handling
industry. Optical marks are bars printed on a document, which by their presence or
absence in a pre-defined code length, contain coded machine data relevant to that doc
-
ument, such as a sorting procedure based on regions or zip codes.
There is no industry wide standard for OMR decoding. Each company has its own
method of decoding. The MS-9 accommodates these by outputting an ASCII binary or
hexadecimal representation of the OMR patterns.
The MS-9, through a unique system of calibration and precise timing, uses a high-speed
moving laser beam to detect and decode moving OMR symbols.
